Białystok — capital of Podlasie — the Versailles of Podlasie, churches of two faiths, and forests and rivers beyond the city.

Białystok is the largest city in north-eastern Poland and the best base for exploring Podlasie. In the centre: the Branicki Palace with its baroque gardens, the triangular Kościuszko Market Square with the town hall, the cathedral, the Orthodox St Nicholas Cathedral and the monumental St Roch's Church — all on one walk. Half an hour away: the synagogue in Tykocin, the monastery in Supraśl, the Tatar mosque in Kruszyniany and the Narew backwaters.

About the region

What to know before you go

Białystok is the capital of the Podlaskie Province — a city where Catholics, Orthodox Christians and, before the war, a large Jewish community have lived side by side for centuries. Within a few hundred metres stand the baroque parish church with the neo-Gothic cathedral, the Orthodox St Nicholas Cathedral and the modernist St Roch's Church. Ludwik Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto, was born here.

The heart of the city is the Branicki Palace, the 18th-century residence of Hetman Jan Klemens Branicki known as the Versailles of Podlasie, and next to it the triangular Kościuszko Market Square with the town hall, home to the Podlasie Museum. The main promenade, Lipowa Street, links the square with St Roch's Church — most of the centre's cafés and restaurants are on it and the side streets.

Białystok is also a great base for day trips: Tykocin with one of Poland's most beautiful synagogues, Supraśl with its monastery and Icon Museum, Kruszyniany with the wooden mosque of the Polish Tatars and the Narew National Park, the "Polish Amazon" — all within an hour's drive. Further on lie the Białowieża Forest and the Biebrza marshes.
