A sight in the Białystok region

St Roch's Church in Białystok — modernism on the hill at the end of Lipowa Street

St Roch's Church closes the vista of Lipowa Street and is one of the finest churches of Polish modernism. It was designed by Oskar Sosnowski and built between 1927 and 1946. The tall tower topped with a statue of the Virgin and the bright, glazed interior impress even those who are not fond of church architecture.

Why go

The church stands on a hill and can be seen from afar. Inside it is surprisingly bright thanks to large windows and a reinforced-concrete structure that was innovative for its time. It was declared a Monument of History in 2018.

The walk along Lipowa from the square takes about 15 minutes and passes the Orthodox St Nicholas Cathedral.
