Darłowo — A seaside castle and a moving bridge over the Wieprza Historic Darłowo and the bathing resort of Darłówko

Darłowo is a remarkable corner of the Polish coast, where a historic town on the river Wieprza joins the seaside resort of Darłówko on the Baltic itself. It is the only Polish town with a true seaside castle — the Gothic Castle of the Dukes of Pomerania, once the residence of King Eric I of Pomerania. The resort divides into East and West Darłówko, linked by the famous moving drawbridge over the mouth of the Wieprza. Wide sandy beaches, a working fishing port and a lighthouse give it the feel of a real harbour town. Darłowo charms with its medieval old town, St Mary's church and the Old Town Hall — and Darłówko with the family atmosphere of a seaside holiday.

What to know before you go

Darłowo is a seaside town in Sławno county, West Pomerania, on the river Wieprza, about 2.5 kilometres from the Baltic shore. Its bathing quarter, Darłówko, lies directly on the sea at the mouth of the Wieprza and divides into two parts — East and West — spread along either bank. The town's historic German name was Rügenwalde. It is a place that combines a rich medieval history with the thoroughly holiday character of a seaside resort.

The region's most precious monument is the Castle of the Dukes of Pomerania — the only surviving seaside castle in Poland, begun in 1352. Within its walls lived Eric I of Pomerania, grandson of Casimir the Great and king of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, who spent the last years of his life in Darłowo. Today the castle houses a museum with rich collections. The second emblem of the old town is the Gothic St Mary's church of the 14th century, which holds the ducal sarcophagi.

The heart of seaside Darłówko is the drawbridge over the mouth of the Wieprza — one of the few moving bridges in Poland, which opens to let cutters and yachts in and out of the port. Right beside it works a busy fishing port, and the shore is crowned by the lighthouse in East Darłówko. The beaches on both sides of the river mouth are wide and sandy with a gentle entry into the water, which makes them ideal for families with children.

Darłowo and Darłówko make a convenient base for the whole of the middle coast. Nearby lie the seaside villages of Dąbki, with its health-giving microclimate between the sea and Lake Bukowo, Wicie, Bobolin and Jarosławiec with its lighthouse and cliff shore. The region offers a combination of beach holiday, monuments and harbour attractions that is hard to find in other resorts on the Polish Baltic.
