Sandomierz is one of the loveliest historic towns in Poland, spread picturesquely across seven hills above the Vistula. A Gothic cathedral, a Renaissance town hall on the market square and an underground tourist route create an atmosphere that draws visitors and film crews all year round.
Sandomierz is a small but exceptionally charming town on the right bank of the Vistula, in the south-eastern corner of the Holy Cross Province. Spread across seven loess hills, for centuries it was one of the most important centres of old Poland and the seat of a castellany, and its historic old town is today among the best preserved in the country.
The heart of the town is the broad, almost square market place with the Renaissance town hall in the middle, ringed by a row of historic townhouses. From here narrow cobbled lanes lead to the Gothic cathedral, the Romanesque church of St James and the royal castle, which looks out over the Vistula valley and the bridge.
Beneath the flagstones of the market square hides Sandomierz's real treasure: the Underground Tourist Route, a network of former merchants' cellars and storerooms joined into almost half a kilometre of passages. High above the town stands the Opatów Gate, the last survivor of four medieval town gates, whose viewing platform offers the finest panorama of Sandomierz.
Sandomierz owes much of its popularity to the television series about Father Mateusz, but the town offers far more than film locations: picturesque loess ravines, the Pepper Hills reserve, local vineyards and boat trips on the Vistula. It is an ideal weekend destination at any time of year.
