The Opatów Gate in Sandomierz — a Gothic gate with a viewing platform

The Opatów Gate was built around 1362 at the foundation of King Casimir the Great as one of four gates in the defensive walls of Sandomierz. In the 16th century it was crowned with a Renaissance parapet, and in 1928–1929 it was roofed and opened to visitors. It is the only one of the original gates to survive to our day and is regarded as one of the best-preserved town gates in Poland. The tower measures about 30 metres and some 130 steps lead to its top. From the viewing platform opens the finest panorama of the old town, the Vistula valley and the Pepper Hills.
