The Underground Tourist Route in Sandomierz — 470 metres of merchants' cellars

The Underground Tourist Route is one of the great attractions of Sandomierz, leading through a network of former merchants' cellars and storerooms cut into the loess beneath the old town. The route runs about 470 metres and reaches a maximum of some 12 metres beneath the market square. The cellars were dug from the Middle Ages onwards as goods stores and in time threatened to bring the town down on itself, which led to their stabilisation and their joining into a single route, opened to visitors in 1977. A visit takes about 45 minutes and is only possible with a guide, who tells the legends and anecdotes attached to the individual vaults, including the famous story of Halszka of Rogów.
