St James's Church in Sandomierz — one of the oldest brick churches in Poland

St James's Church is one of the oldest brick churches in Poland, raised between 1226 and 1250 by the Dominicans brought to Sandomierz by Bishop Iwo Odrowąż of Kraków. Built of brick in the late Romanesque style, it is remarkable for its richly decorated brick northern portal, regarded as a gem of Romanesque ornament. The church keeps the memory of Blessed Sadok and the 48 Dominican martyrs who, by tradition, died here during the Tatar raid of 1260. After 137 years away the Dominicans returned to Sandomierz in 2001, and a small vineyard has been laid out beside the church in a nod to the monastic tradition.
