Queen Jadwiga's Ravine in Sandomierz — a loess ravine with exposed tree roots

Queen Jadwiga's Ravine is one of the finest loess ravines around Sandomierz, only a quarter of an hour's walk from the market square. It runs just under half a kilometre and in places reaches about 10 metres deep; trees grow on its steep walls and their exposed roots create a distinctive, mysterious landscape. Ravines like this formed through the erosion of soft loess, washed out by water and worn down by generations of local feet. The name recalls the legend of Queen Jadwiga, who is said to have walked this way on pilgrimage. Today a popular, shaded footpath runs through it, at its loveliest in spring and autumn.
