The Pepper Hills in Sandomierz — a reserve with shales 500 million years old

The Pepper Hills are a small range a few kilometres east of Sandomierz's old town, regarded as one of the geologically oldest places in Poland. They are built of Cambrian shales more than 500 million years old which, as they weather, break down into fine dark fragments resembling grains of pepper — hence the name of the whole range. The nature reserve created here protects a unique community of steppe vegetation, and above all more than a dozen species of wild rose that flower at the turn of June and July. From the tops a wide view opens over the meanders of the Vistula and the panorama of Sandomierz, and a comfortable footpath runs through the reserve.
