A sight in the Sandomierz region

The Royal Castle in Sandomierz — a Gothic-Renaissance seat of the museum

The Royal Castle in Sandomierz stands on a hill at about 159 metres above sea level, looking down over the Vistula valley. On the site of a wooden stronghold, Casimir the Great raised a masonry Gothic castle in the 14th century, later extended in Renaissance style under Sigismund the Old. In 1656, during the Swedish Deluge, Swedish troops blew up a large part of the castle, destroying it almost entirely; mainly the western wing survives today. The castle now houses the District Museum with rich archaeological, historical and ethnographic collections, and its terraces look out over the river and the bridge.
