A sight in the Darłowo region

St Gertrude's Chapel in Darłowo

St Gertrude's Chapel in Darłowo is one of the most original works of religious architecture in Pomerania. Raised in brick in the 15th century, it has an unusual octagonal plan with a tall, steep roof and an internal ambulatory carried on columns. Originally it served as a cemetery and almshouse chapel outside the town walls. Its central form, twelve-sided in the plan of the interior, is a rarity in Polish Gothic architecture and draws lovers of history and architecture alike. Today the chapel is open to visitors and is one of the distinguishing features of Darłowo's old town.
