A sight in the Białystok region

Zamenhof Centre in Białystok — the city where Esperanto was born

Ludwik Zamenhof was born in Białystok in 1859. Seeing how Poles, Jews, Russians and Germans here struggled to understand one another, he created Esperanto — a language for everyone. The centre named after him shows multicultural Białystok of the late 19th century and is a good starting point for the Jewish Heritage Trail.

What you will see

The permanent exhibition recreates streets, courtyards and interiors of old Białystok with period sounds and photographs. The centre also hosts concerts, films and temporary exhibitions.

The Jewish Heritage Trail starts nearby — before the war Jews made up the majority of the city's inhabitants.
