A sight in the Białystok region

Tykocin — synagogue, market square and castle on the Narew

Tykocin, about 30 km from Białystok, is one of the most atmospheric small towns of Podlasie. The Great Synagogue of 1642 with restored wall paintings is a museum, the small square has a statue of Hetman Czarniecki, and the rebuilt castle stands above the Narew.

What to see

In the synagogue look for the bimah and Hebrew inscriptions on the walls; the former Talmudic house next door is a museum. On the other side of town: the baroque Holy Trinity church and a former monastery.

A short walk leads to the castle, with views over the river's backwaters.
