Ironworks, slag and the start of the cure
Ustroń began as an industrial village rather than a resort. Forges and a blast furnace worked in the Vistula valley, and in the nineteenth century someone noticed that water heated by tipping glowing slag into it did people good — the slag released sulphur compounds. An entirely local observation turned into a spa tradition, and the geology was only brought in to support it later.
The second foundation is the climate. The town sits at about 360 metres in the Vistula valley, sheltered to the west by Czantoria Wielka (995 metres) and to the east by Równica (884 metres). That gives mild conditions without the strain of high altitude, which is why the health ministry classes Ustroń as a foothill spa. Silesia has only two such towns, and in the Silesian Beskids Ustroń is the only one holding spa status.
The town has around sixteen thousand residents and only received its charter in 1956, so for most of its spa history it was a large industrial village with a bath house attached.
Brine, peat and a pump room
Treatment now works from an iodide-bromide-chloride brine raised through two boreholes about 1,700 metres deep in the spa quarter. The municipal tourism service gives its concentration as roughly 12.5 per cent, strong enough that it has to be diluted for bathing.
The second resource is therapeutic peat from the Zabłocie deposit, used in baths, wraps and compresses and credited with anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic effects. There is also a pump room for mineral waters in the spa park, which is a rarity anywhere in the Beskids.
The treatment profile covers conditions of the musculoskeletal system and rheumatic disease, respiratory conditions, circulatory conditions and metabolic disorders including obesity. Older accounts add mild rheumatic complaints, recovery after injury and chronic inflammation of the peripheral nerves — which is a fair description of what brine, peat and a sheltered climate are good for.
Zawodzie, a spa quarter built into a slope
The spa quarter is not in the centre but on the flank of Równica, in the Zawodzie district. Construction of the sanatorium complex began there in 1967, and it produced the town's most recognisable buildings: blocks that widen as they rise, stacked in terraces up the hill. Each storey is wider than the one below, so the balconies of the lower floors are roofed by the floors above.
Architecturally this is one of the more interesting examples of Polish post-war modernism in the mountains. The buildings make no attempt at regional style and do not hide behind trees; they deliberately compose the skyline of the slope. You need not like them, but this view, rather than any historicist bath architecture, is what the spa at Ustroń looks like.
Below Zawodzie, down in the valley, lies the spa park with an amphitheatre, and paths climb from there onto Równica. Guests on a course of treatment therefore have two entirely different walks on the doorstep: flat through the park, or steep up the hill.
Getting there
- By car — from Katowice on the expressway towards Cieszyn, then up the Vistula valley; the turn for the spa quarter is signed separately, because Zawodzie lies above the town centre.
- By train — line 191 from Goleszów to Wisła Głębce. Within the town there are stations at Ustroń and Ustroń Polana and halts at Ustroń Zdrój and Ustroń Brzegi, so trains stop almost at the spa quarter. The rebuilt line has been in service since 11 December 2022.
- By bus — long-distance and regional coaches stop in the centre, with municipal buses running up to Zawodzie.
- On foot and by cable car — a lift runs up Czantoria and marked paths climb Równica, the simplest way out of the spa quarter for anyone staying a while.
Worth knowing
If you have come to look at the spa rather than to take a cure, go to Zawodzie and work your way uphill. From the lowest terraces the buildings read as ordinary apartment blocks; only higher up do their stepped section and the view down the Vistula valley make sense of the way they were placed.
Keep two things apart. The spa proper is Zawodzie and the park in the valley, where the brine, the peat and the pump room are. Everything else — the cable car, the hiking paths, the summer toboggan run, the wildlife park with falconry displays — is the town's tourist offer and has nothing to do with treatment. A day covers one or the other, not both.
Rail access is unusually good, with several stops inside the town. For a stay without a car, Ustroń is one of the few towns in the Beskids where that works with no compromises at all.

When to go
The slope of Równica greens from the bottom up, and the sanatorium terraces have their best view now, before the leaves close off the valley. Paths can be muddy, so the spa park is the better walk.
Peak season for spa guests and tourists at once. The valley is warm while the air up at Zawodzie stays cooler — one of the reasons the complex was built on the hillside.
The best time to combine treatment with walking: the forests on Czantoria and Równica turn strongly and the spa park is already quiet. Days are short, so save the climbs for the morning.
Treatment runs as usual and the surrounding slopes become ski runs, so the town is busy. The walk up from the centre to Zawodzie can be icy — the slope really is steep.
