The pyramid sanatoria in Ustroń-Zawodzie — communist-era modernism

The Zawodzie spa district on the slope of Równica is famous for its group of modernist sanatoria with their distinctive conical shape, popularly known as the pyramids. They were designed by the architects Henryk Buszko and Aleksander Franta with Tadeusz Szewczyk. The original plan called for 28 holiday and sanatorium buildings stepped across the hillside; in the end a dozen or so were built, mostly in the 1970s. Above the group towers the huge, many-storey Równica sanatorium. Today the buildings form a spa treating with brine and peat mud, and the architecture itself is regarded as one of the icons of Polish modernism.
