The summer residence of the grand masters
Sztum Castle was built in the 14th century as one of the Teutonic Order's strongholds and served the grand masters as a summer and hunting residence — a quiet place to rest not far from their main seat at Malbork.

The castle stands picturesquely by a lake, which from the start gave it both defensive and restful qualities. Fragments of the walls, the gates and the buildings survive, and the setting invites a walk by the water.
