A sight in the Malbork region

The Outer Bailey and the Karwan in Malbork

The outer, working belt of the fortress with the Order's supply base — with the monumental Karwan, the former cart house and arsenal, and a system of walls, moats and gates above the Nogat.

The working part of the fortress

The Outer Bailey (the Low Castle) was the working base of the fortress — it held the workshops, granaries, stables and the supply base for the garrison. This part kept Europe's largest Gothic fortress running day to day and under siege.

The Karwan

The Karwan is a large utility building — the former cart house and armoury, where wagons, equipment and weapons were kept. Its severe, massive brick architecture contrasts with the ceremonial halls of the Middle and High Castles.

Walls, moats and gates

  • Defensive walls — the outer ring of the fortress's defences
  • Moats — separating the parts of the complex from one another
  • Gates and drawbridges — the way into the castle complex
  • A walk along the Nogat beside the outer walls
