A sight in the Kaszuby region

The Kashubian Ethnographic Park at Wdzydze Kiszewskie — the oldest open-air museum in Poland

The Teodora and Izydor Gulgowski Kashubian Ethnographic Park at Wdzydze Kiszewskie is the oldest open-air museum in Poland — founded in 1906. Across 22 hectares on Lake Gołuń stand farmsteads, a church of 1700, mills, a forge and an inn.

The museum's history

The museum was founded in 1906 by a married couple of teachers, Teodora and Izydor Gulgowski. They bought a thatched 18th-century house and set up a private Kashubian Museum in it. Today, more than 100 years on, the site covers 22 hectares on the shore of Lake Gołuń, in the southern part of Kashubia.

What you can see

  • Peasant farmsteads — complete holdings from several centuries
  • The church from Swornegacie — a wooden church of 1700
  • Mills and a forge — historic craft workshops
  • Demonstrations — bread baking, pottery and basket weaving

In practice

The museum lies on Lake Gołuń, about 16 km south-west of Kościerzyna. Allow at least 2–3 hours for a visit. In season there are folk fairs and demonstrations of old crafts. It is worth checking the current opening hours before a visit.
