A sight in the Wrocław region

Ostrów Tumski — the cathedral cradle of Wrocław

Wrocław began on this island. Today it is a quiet, sacred corner with the archcathedral, its churches and an atmosphere underlined by gas lamps lit by hand by a lamplighter.

The archcathedral

The archcathedral of St John the Baptist is a Gothic church with two soaring towers; a lift takes you up one of them to a viewing terrace with a panorama of the city and the Oder. Around it stands a group of churches and church buildings that give the island its exceptional, intimate character.

The lamplighter and the atmosphere

At dusk a lamplighter appears on Ostrów Tumski and lights the gas lamps by hand — one of the few such rituals left in Europe. This is the best time for a walk over the bridges and along the island's lanes, especially across the Tumski Bridge (once hung with "love padlocks").

Nearby

  • The Botanical Garden — right beside it, one of the oldest in Poland
  • The Market Hall — historic, with a striking reinforced-concrete structure
  • The Oder embankments — a walk towards the University and the Market Square
