The archcathedral
The archcathedral of St John the Baptist is a Gothic church with two soaring towers; a lift takes you up one of them to a viewing terrace with a panorama of the city and the Oder. Around it stands a group of churches and church buildings that give the island its exceptional, intimate character.
The lamplighter and the atmosphere
At dusk a lamplighter appears on Ostrów Tumski and lights the gas lamps by hand — one of the few such rituals left in Europe. This is the best time for a walk over the bridges and along the island's lanes, especially across the Tumski Bridge (once hung with "love padlocks").
