King Sobieski's residence
Wilanów Palace was built by King John III Sobieski — who defeated the Turks at Vienna in 1683 — at the end of the 17th century as his summer residence. The building combines the form of a Baroque residence with elements of the Polish nobleman's manor. In the following centuries it passed to further magnate families, who enlarged its collections.
Wilanów is one of the few places in Warsaw to survive the Second World War without great damage — the interiors and part of the furnishings are original. As early as 1805 one of Poland's first museums was opened here.
The interiors and the garden
Inside you can see the Baroque royal chambers, a gallery of Polish portraiture and rich furnishings. The palace is surrounded by a two-level Baroque garden in the Italian manner with terraces, and beyond it an English landscape park with ponds.
The interiors and the garden are ticketed separately; on one day a week the palace interiors are free. In winter the park hosts the „Royal Garden of Light”.
