A sight in the Roztocze region

Susiec — the Tanew cascades and the „Nad Tanwią” reserve

The szypoty are a series of cascades on the river Tanew, which flows along the southern edge of Roztocze. They are protected by the „Nad Tanwią” reserve near Susiec — the water spills over limestone steps, forming dozens of small waterfalls among beech and fir woods.

The cascades and the reserve

The Tanew cascades form where rock steps run across the current. The water spills over them in a series of small cascades a few dozen centimetres high. There are dozens of such steps — one of the most recognisable natural phenomena in Roztocze.

What it looks like

  • An education trail — a waymarked route through the reserve
  • Wooden footbridges — over the river at its loveliest point
  • The tree stand — protected beech and fir forest
  • A confluence — the Jeleń joins the Tanew close by

Practical notes

The route to the reserve starts at Susiec — from the railway station or the central car park, then on foot along waymarked trails. The walk there and back takes about 2–3 hours. It is a comfortable route for families too. You must not leave the education trail — the area is strictly protected.
