A sight in the Roztocze region

Józefów — the Babia Dolina quarry and the limestone outcrops

The Babia Dolina quarry near Józefów is a disused working where the white Roztocze limestone was cut for years, used among other things in the architecture of Zamość. Today it is a popular spot for film and photography, and beside it lies a reservoir known as the „Morskie Oko of Roztocze”.

The stone and its history

Józefów limestone is a warm, sandy-beige rock quarried since the 18th century in the local workings. It was used for columns and details in Zamość and in the region's churches. The Babia Dolina quarry is a visitor attraction today — its white walls and rock layers look almost desert-like.

What is around

  • Film locations — shoots for Polish films and commercials
  • The „Roztocze Sahara” — the nickname given to the white rocks of the area
  • A reservoir — nearby, called the „Morskie Oko of Roztocze”
  • Education trails — routes between the quarries around Józefów

Practical notes

The quarry is open to all — but take care near the steep walls. It combines well with a visit to the town of Józefów and a walk by the nearby reservoir. In photographs the quarry is at its most striking at sunset, when the walls glow gold.
