A sight in the Roztocze region

The Church on the Water of St John of Nepomuk at Zwierzyniec

The masonry Baroque church of St John of Nepomuk stands on an artificial island in the middle of a pond at Zwierzyniec. Raised in the 18th century at the foundation of the Zamoyski Entail, it is one of the most recognisable emblems of Roztocze.

A church on an island

The church of St John of Nepomuk was built between 1741 and 1747 at the foundation of the Zamoyski family, then the owners of these estates. It stands on a purpose-built island in the middle of a pond formed by damming the river Świerszcz. A reinforced concrete bridge links it to the shore.

What to see

  • The masonry structure — a Baroque church of 1741–1747
  • The interior furnishings — Baroque altars and wall paintings
  • The setting — an island on a pond, reached by a concrete bridge
  • An emblem of Roztocze — one of the region's most recognisable images

Practical notes

The church stands in Zwierzyniec, close to the headquarters of Roztocze National Park. It is an active church — visits take place outside services. It is worth stopping even just to look from outside, especially on a clear day when the building is mirrored in the water.
