A sight in the Mielno region

The Jamno Canal — the passage from Lake Jamno to the Baltic

The Jamno Canal is an artificial link between Lake Jamno and the Baltic Sea, dug in 1890 to allow navigation between the lake and the sea. This short cut through the spit, a few hundred metres long, is an atmospheric spot for a walk — with the lake water on one side and the open sea on the other. In recent years the canal has been extended with a lock, storm gates and a bascule bridge, to open Jamno to the Baltic once again.

Why a canal

Lake Jamno was once an open sea bay, which a spit gradually closed off from the sea. To make navigation between the lake and the sea possible again, in 1890 the Jamno Canal was dug — an artificial cut through the spit about 500 metres long.

Today

Today the canal is a favourite spot for a walk: a narrow strip of land between the water of the lake and the open sea. In recent years works have been under way — a lock, storm gates and a bascule bridge — to open Jamno to sea navigation once more. It is worth checking the current state of the works on the spot.
