Poland's most famous mountain spa — mineral waters, historic spa architecture and a promenade, ringed by the wooded summits of the Sącz Beskids with Jaworzyna Krynicka (1114 m) at their head. Here a course of treatment goes together with skiing, walking and the Lemko heritage.
Krynica-Zdrój is the best-known mountain spa in Poland, called “the pearl of Polish spa towns”. It lies in the valley of the Kryniczanka in the Sącz Beskids, at about 560–620 m a.s.l., surrounded by the wooded ridges of the Jaworzyna range. The town developed as a spa from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and had its heyday around 1900 and again between the wars.
The heart of the resort is its grand promenade (Bulwary Dietla) with the Main Pump Room, where visitors taste the local mineral waters — among them the famous “Zuber”, one of the most highly mineralised waters in Europe. Along the promenade stand historic spa houses, guesthouses and cafés, and in the evenings music drifts from the bandstand.
Two viewpoints, each with its own railway, rise above the town: Góra Parkowa with a historic funicular of 1937, and Jaworzyna Krynicka (1114 m a.s.l.) with a gondola lift — in winter the largest ski station in the Sącz Beskids, in summer a walking destination with a wide panorama that in good weather reaches the Tatras.
The country around is a living Lemko heritage — wooden Eastern-rite churches on the Wooden Architecture Route (including the UNESCO-listed church at Powroźnik) — and keeps the memory of Nikifor Krynicki, one of the most famous naive painters, whose museum occupies the villa “Romanówka”. Nearby lie the other spa towns of the Poprad valley: Muszyna, Żegiestów-Zdrój and Piwniczna-Zdrój.
Getting there: about 2.5–3 hours by car from Kraków (DK75 / DW981), or by train to Krynica station. Krynica-Zdrój is a year-round destination — combining spa treatment and wellness with skiing in winter and walking and cycling in summer.
