Kołobrzeg — a spa, a beach and a harbour on the Baltic.
One of Poland's largest seaside resorts and at the same time a spa town with more than a century of tradition — a wide sandy beach, a lighthouse by the harbour entrance, a pier, a spa park and a brine microclimate.
What to know before you go
Kołobrzeg plays two parts: a busy resort with a wide beach and a promenade, and a spa town with peat mud and brine that has been at work since the 19th century. That keeps the town living on tourism all year — beach life in summer, and sanatorium stays and walking out of season.
Its landmark is the lighthouse by the harbour entrance — with a viewing platform over the harbour, the beach and the sea. From here it is close to the pier, the wide beach and the seaside promenade with its redoubts and the monument to Poland's Wedding to the Sea.
In the centre stands the Gothic co-cathedral (basilica) of St Mary with its distinctive tower block, and nearby the spa park, the graduation towers and the sanatorium quarter. The town also has a strong historical and military strand (the Museum of Polish Arms and the fighting for Kołobrzeg in 1945).
Kołobrzeg lies on the railway and is well connected with Poznań, Szczecin and Warsaw (with extra seasonal trains in summer). It also makes a convenient base for trips along the West Pomeranian coast.
