What a połonina is
Połoniny are a landscape peculiar to the Eastern Carpathians — high grassy meadows above the natural treeline. In the Bieszczady they appear from about 1,100 m upwards. They came about in two ways: partly naturally (the continental climate limits tree growth on the ridges) and partly through human activity (centuries of grazing sheep and cattle by the Boykos and Lemkos who lived in these mountains until 1947).
After the resettlements of the 1940s the grazing stopped and the meadows began to be overgrown with dwarf pine. Bieszczady National Park carries out active protection of the połoniny — symbolic sheep grazing, mowing and clearing dwarf pine — to keep this unique landscape. Without that work the Bieszczady would lose their character within a few decades.
Połonina Wetlińska — the route
Połonina Wetlińska is a ridge about 7 kilometres long running from Brzegi Górne (on the eastern side) to Smerek (on the western). Its highest point is Hnatowe Berdo (1255 m), where Chatka Puchatka stands — a PTTK hut from 1953, one of the most iconic huts in the Polish mountains. Spartan and wooden, it offers a bed (about 30–40 zł, in a shared dormitory) and hot soup.
The classic route is Brzegi Górne → Chatka Puchatka → Smerek → Wetlina (about 6–7 hours, about 14 km). It is of moderate difficulty — a steep climb, easy going along the ridge, then a steep descent. Winter makes it harder — crampons, an ice axe and knowledge of the terrain are needed (on the meadow there are no markers, only snow).

- The panorama of Tarnica and Bukowe Berdo (to the east) — the highest peaks of the Bieszczady
- The view of Wielka Rawka (Slovakia) and the Eastern Carpathian ranges to the south
- To the north — Lake Solina and the foothills
- In the evening — mist rising from the valleys, one of the finest sights in the Polish mountains
Worth knowing
- Weather — on the ridge it is always 5–10°C colder than in the valley. The wind is strong and only partly predictable. Take a jacket
- Storms — afternoon storms are typical in summer. Set off early (5:00–7:00) to be at the hut before midday
- Water — there are no springs on the ridge. Take at least 1.5 l per person
- The hut — Chatka Puchatka has limited space and can be full at weekends in July and August. Booking is not possible — first come, first served
- Wildlife — bison are often visible from the ridge; bears and wolves rarely (mostly in the valleys)

When to go
May — the meadows in full flower, quite breathtaking. June — mild weather. The best time.
Crowds in July and August, but the ridge is long — it is easy to find quiet. Afternoon storms.
Golden beeches on the slopes, though the ridge grass has yellowed. Morning mists — magical.
For the experienced only. Avalanches are rare, but strong winds, frost and fog make it dangerous.
