The cradle of the oil industry
At Bóbrka, in the middle of the 19th century, on the initiative of Ignacy Łukasiewicz — the inventor of the kerosene lamp — the oldest oil field in the world was established. Industrial oil extraction began here, long before the great fields elsewhere in the world.
Today's museum is an open-air museum of technology on the site of the historic field — surviving wells, historic drilling rigs and machinery, and exhibitions on the history of the industry.

Visiting
The museum is at Bóbrka, in the country on the way to the Bieszczady, and makes a good half-day, with children too. Admission is ticketed; part of the visit is outdoors — sturdy footwear and clothes suited to the weather are advisable. Check the opening hours for the season.
