A sight in the Toruń region

The town walls and the Philadelphia Embankment in Toruń

The belt of medieval fortifications on the Vistula side — gates, towers and walls — together with the Philadelphia Embankment, from which (and from the far bank) opens the famous panorama of the Gothic old town.

Walls and gates

The fullest stretch of Toruń's medieval town walls survives on the Vistula side — with gates and towers from the Hanseatic era. The most distinctive is the Sailors' Gate, through which the road once ran from the harbour to the market square, along with the line of defensive towers along the bank.

The Philadelphia Embankment

  • A promenade along the Vistula — an easy walk at the foot of the walls
  • Excursion boats — seasonal trips on the Vistula
  • The view of the old town — the most famous frame of the Gothic panorama
  • Kępa Bazarowa — the island on the far bank with the best spot for a photograph of the old town

Combine it with

The embankment lies directly below the old town — the walk naturally links the walls with the market square, the Leaning Tower and the House of Copernicus. The classic panorama is seen from the far bank of the Vistula (Kępa Bazarowa), especially at sunset.
