Suwałki — the capital of the region and its base for trips

Suwałki is the capital and largest town of the region and the best base for exploring it. The town was founded by the Camaldolese monks of Wigry and has kept a legible neoclassical layout along the ceremonial ul. Kościuszki. It is also the birthplace of Maria Konopnicka, with the co-cathedral of St Alexander and the Czarna Hańcza valley within its boundaries.

Suwałki was founded in the 18th century at the grant of the Camaldolese monks of Wigry and quickly grew into the region's capital. From that period comes the neoclassical layout with its wide main street, neoclassical townhouses and churches. The poet Maria Konopnicka was born in Suwałki.
