The former Camaldolese monastery at Wigry — a Baroque complex on a peninsula

The monastery at Wigry is a Baroque former Camaldolese complex raised on a peninsula reaching into Lake Wigry — an emblem of the whole Suwałki region. The Camaldolese monks settled here in the 17th century at the grant of King John Casimir. Today you can visit the church, the clock tower, the hermits' cells and the Papal Apartments, where John Paul II stayed in 1999.

The monastery's history

The Camaldolese — an order of hermit monks — received Wigry in 1667 at the grant of King John Casimir. On the peninsula they raised a Baroque complex with a church and separate hermitages. After the order was dissolved the monastery fell into decline; it was thoroughly rebuilt in the 20th century.
