Lake Hańcza — the deepest lake in Poland

Lake Hańcza is the deepest lake in Poland and in the whole Central European Lowland — it reaches 108.5 m. It lies at the heart of the Suwałki Landscape Park, in a deep post-glacial trough, with steep stony shores and exceptionally clean, cold water. It is one of Poland's best-known diving waters.

Depth and nature

Hańcza formed in a deep trough carved by the ice sheet. Unlike most Polish lakes it has stony shores and underwater rock. The cold, very clean water is home to rare species and makes the lake a destination for divers from all over Poland.

Practical notes

The lake lies in the Suwałki Landscape Park, about 25 km from Suwałki. The easiest access is at the villages of Błaskowizna and Bachanowo. Swimming is possible, but the water is cold; local centres organise dives. Waymarked trails run around the lake through a landscape of hills.
