A sight in the Góry Świętokrzyskie region

Kielce — Kadzielnia, the market square and the gateway to the Holy Cross Mountains

Kielce is the provincial capital and the natural gateway to the Holy Cross Mountains. In the middle of the city lies the Kadzielnia geological reserve — a former quarry with an amphitheatre, the Geologists' Rock and an underground route. Also worth seeing are the historic market square, the Baroque palace of the bishops of Kraków and the Karczówka reserve.

Kadzielnia and geology

Kadzielnia is a geological reserve in the middle of Kielce — a former limestone quarry with its distinctive Geologists' Rock above a turquoise pool. An underground tourist route runs inside it, and a large concert amphitheatre stands alongside.

What to see

  • Kadzielnia — the reserve, the amphitheatre and the underground route
  • The market square and the bishops' palace — a Baroque residence, today the National Museum
  • The Geocentre — an interactive exhibition on the geology of the region
  • The Karczówka reserve — a hilltop monastery with a view

Practical notes

Kielce lies on the S7 and is the best base for the whole region. Kadzielnia is open to all; the underground route and the Geocentre are ticketed. It is worth setting aside a whole day for the city.
