The monastery's history
The Camaldolese — a strict contemplative order living as hermits — received the peninsula on Lake Wigry in the 17th century from King John II Casimir. Through the 17th and 18th centuries a Baroque monastery complex grew up here: a church on the rise, a house for the hermits, individual hermitages and working buildings, all within a wall.
After the order was dissolved the complex changed its use many times, and during the Second World War it was severely damaged. It was rebuilt after the war; today it houses a creative retreat and is open to visitors. In June 1999 Pope John Paul II stayed here.
What to see
- The Baroque church on the rise, with crypts beneath it
- The hermitages — small separate cottages where the monks lived alone
- The clock and viewing tower — a wide view over Lake Wigry and the surrounding forests
- The courtyard and monastery wall — the preserved layout of the complex
Where it is and what is around
The monastery lies in the heart of Wigry National Park, about 15 km north of Augustów. The peninsula reaches deep into the lake, so the complex is surrounded by water on many sides — it looks its best from the lake or from the viewing tower. Walking trails and the Czarna Hańcza kayak route pass nearby; the visit combines well with exploring the park.
