The lake in brief
Necko is a post-glacial trough lake of 401 hectares and up to 25 metres deep. To the north it joins Lake Białe Augustowskie and to the south, through the river Netta, the system of the Augustów Canal. The water is clean (class II) and holds many species of fish: pike, zander, tench and bream. The town shore has been developed — there is a beach, a promenade, a cycle path, playgrounds and places to eat.
The beach and bathing area
The main municipal beach („Bielnik”) takes up about 200 metres of shoreline. It is lifeguarded in season (June–August) from 10:00 to 18:00. Entry is free. The beach is sandy, with changing rooms, showers and toilets. The lake bed slopes gently and it is shallow near the shore (ideal for children), with about 3 metres at the end of the swimming jetty.
The second, more intimate beach is at Studzieniczna (7 km from the centre), with a sandy shore and fewer people. A third option is the naturist beach on the eastern shore (marked, about 2 km from town).
Watersports
Necko is one of the largest watersports bases in Podlasie. What you can do:
- Kayaks — hire at 30–40 zł an hour; most places also run organised trips on the Czarna Hańcza
- Pedalos — 30–50 zł an hour, available on the main beach
- Sailing dinghies — hire from 150 zł a day; several sailing clubs, licence required
- Windsurfing — the wind is usually westerly, with the best conditions around midday
- Wakeboarding and water skiing — jet skis and tow boats for hire
- Fishing — an angling card and a permit from the Polish Angling Association are required (both available in town)
The Necko promenade
One of the best walks in Augustów. It runs from the municipal beach along the southern shore to the passenger harbour (about 1.5 km). Along the way: ice cream stands, cafés, playgrounds and monuments (including one to the wooden fishing boats). On summer evenings the promenade comes alive — with street musicians, fairs and kite displays.
Viewpoints
- The viewing tower at „Bielnik” — wooden, 12 metres high, with a panorama of the lake
- The Sucharski Bridge — crossing the narrows between Necko and Białe, an excellent spot for sunset
- Iglica hill — on foot from the promenade, about 15 minutes' climb, with a view over the whole lake

When to go
Walking and running on the promenade, but the water is still cold. The hire places open in May.
Sunbathing and watersports in full swing. In July and August the beach is full by midday — come early or in the evening.
The best time for fishing. Warm days into mid-October and fine colours over the lake.
A hard frost means a natural ice rink and ice yachting. The promenade is lit and pleasant for an evening walk.
