What the park is
Biebrza National Park is the largest national park in Poland by area and protects one of the largest surviving natural marsh and peatland areas in Central Europe. Its heart is the largely unregulated valley of the river Biebrza with its vast meadows, flooded every year.
The park is on the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. In spring the floods turn the valley into an enormous sheet of water — the most spectacular moment of the year for wildlife watchers.
Animals and birds
- Birds — one of the most important breeding and migration sites for waterbirds in Europe (the ruff and the great snipe among them)
- Elk — the Biebrza is the most famous place in Poland to watch wild elk
- Beavers and otters — numerous along the river's branches
- Observation towers and boardwalks — a well-developed infrastructure in several places
Visiting and getting there
The park lies near Augustów (about an hour's drive) and combines well with a stay in the region. Admission is charged (a park ticket); there are marked paths, observation towers and viewing boardwalks. The best time is spring (the floods and bird migration) and morning or evening for watching elk. Sturdy footwear and mosquito protection are advisable.
