The Czarna Hańcza — the flagship kayak route of the Suwałki region

The river and the route

The Czarna Hańcza is the longest river of the Suwałki region. For kayakers the most important stretch is below Lake Wigry: the river winds through the Augustów Forest, meandering heavily through uninhabited, wooded country. The lower course is often combined with the Augustów Canal, making a longer circular route.

It is not a difficult route, with a gentle current, suitable for less experienced paddlers too, but the distance and the wild surroundings call for planning. There is a well-developed kayaking infrastructure — hire places, organised transport and camping spots.

Practice and nature protection

Part of the route runs through Wigry National Park — nature protection rules apply there (designated launching and landing places, campsites, and charges in places). It is worth going with a local hire company, which provides kayaks, transport and the logistics. The main season is May to September; when the water is low in high summer some stretches can be shallow.
