The cable car — a technical monument
The Kuźnice → Kasprowy Wierch cable car was built in 1936 — at the extraordinary pace of 7 months' construction. The scheme drew sharp protests from conservationists (Władysław Szafer and Walery Goetel) over the damage to the landscape and the intrusion into a future national park. The propaganda argument prevailed — Poland needed a symbol of modernisation.
The line is 4,291 m long with a rise of 936 m, with a change at Myślenickie Turnie (about 1,352 m). The cars were thoroughly modernised in 2007 — today the journey takes 12 minutes each way with a capacity of 360 people an hour. Tickets are expensive (about 89 zł one way, about 115 zł return) and in season online booking (pkl.pl) is essential — without it you can wait for hours or not get up at all.
What to see from the summit
- The High Tatras — Świnica, Kozi Wierch, the Granaty and Kriváň (Polish and Slovak)
- The Western Tatras — the Czerwone Wierchy, Małołączniak and, beyond them, the Chočské range
- The Polish side — Zakopane, Gubałówka, the Pieniny and, in perfect visibility, Babia Góra
- The IMGW weather station — at work since 1938, one of the oldest high mountain stations in Poland
- The hut by the upper cable car station — bigos, tea and somewhere to sit out the rain
On foot to Kasprowy
The climb on foot takes 3–4 hours. The classic routes:
- From Kuźnice via Hala Gąsienicowa and Sucha Przełęcz (about 3.5 hours, yellow then blue)
- From Kuźnice via Myślenickie Turnie (about 3 hours, harder work) — beneath the cable car
- From Kiry via Hala Kondratowa and Goryczkowa (about 4 hours, longer and less crowded)
- Coming down by cable car: the last run is about 15:30 in summer and 14:30 in winter — check the times
In winter — skiing
Kasprowy is the highest ski area in Poland. Two cirques: Kocioł Goryczkowy and Kocioł Gąsienicowy, served by drag lifts and a chairlift. The runs are FIS-approved (red and black), with no slopes for beginners. Snow lies from December to May, sometimes longer. In season you go up in the cable cars with a ski pass — expensive (about 250 zł for a day pass at peak times) and with queues.
From the upper cirque you descend towards Kuźnice over the Goryczkowa slopes (a run of about 6 km). For the advanced — Kasprowy is a tradition of Polish skiing, but not the place for your first descent.

When to go
March to May — snow on the ridge and the cable car running. Fine skiing on Goryczkowa.
Crowds and long queues. Afternoon storms — try to be at the top by 10:00 and come down before 14:00.
September is the best — clear weather, colour and fewer people. The cable car runs all year.
The height of the ski season. The cable cars run on ski passes, with long queues at Christmas.
