The castle's history
The first defences at Kazimierz (a wooden stronghold) date from the 12th and 13th centuries. In the middle of the 14th century Casimir the Great raised a Gothic castle of rubble stone here — part of the system of defences along the Vistula that protected the river trade routes. The castle was rectangular, with a defensive tower, a chapel and a hall of state.
It stayed in use through the 15th to 17th centuries and was extended and embellished in the Renaissance (mid-16th century). The Swedish wars (the Deluge of 1655–1660) and fires brought progressive ruin. By the 18th century the castle was already a ruin, and in the 19th it was partly pulled down for building material. What survives are fragments of the curtain walls, the north tower and vaulted cellars.
The tower — older than the castle
A few dozen metres from the castle stands a round defensive tower, probably built in the second half of the 13th century — before the castle, as part of the earlier stronghold's defences. It is about 10 m across and some 20 m high, with walls more than 4 m thick. It too was destroyed in the Swedish wars, but later partly rebuilt.
The tower is open inside to visitors (a ticket of about 5–10 zł) — wooden stairs lead to a viewing platform. From the top you see the panorama of the whole of Kazimierz, the Vistula and the surrounding hills. The interior is bare — stone walls and unheated chambers.

- The market square from above — a view of the Przybyła and Celej houses from the tower's perspective
- The Vistula — the river is best seen from here, with traditional boats and excursion craft
- The Hill of Three Crosses opposite — clearly outlined in good visibility
- The Reformati monastery on the Tatar hill — outlined among the greenery
- Mehoffer — the monument to Józef Mehoffer (an artist associated with Kazimierz) on the hill

When to go
Opened for the season in May, with few visitors and a freshly green hill.
Crowds at midday; the evening is the loveliest. A golden sunset over the Vistula.
September — colours and atmospheric morning mists. October is wet and the steps slippery.
