A sight in the Mazury region

The Elbląg Canal and its slipways — boats sailing over grass

One of the most remarkable hydro-engineering monuments in Europe — a system of inclined planes on which boats are carried on rail-borne cradles from one water level to another, so that they seem to be sailing „over grass”.

An exceptional monument of engineering

The Elbląg Canal links the lakes of the old Oberland and overcomes a considerable difference in levels. Instead of a long flight of locks, the 19th century built inclined planes — the boats ride on cradles running on rails overland, driven by the power of water itself.

The effect is an extraordinary sight: the boat appears to glide „over grass”. The canal is regarded as an outstanding feat of engineering and it still works today — as a tourist attraction with excursion boats.

The boat trip

  • Excursion boats — seasonal trips across several of the inclined planes
  • Routes of different lengths — from short trips to a full day
  • Tickets and timetable — seasonal, check in advance
  • Close to Masuria — good for a day out

Practical matters

A trip takes anything from a few hours depending on the route you choose — check the timetable and book ahead in season. It is a calm, family-friendly experience, and a particular treat for anyone who likes engineering.
