What Śnieżka is
Śnieżka is the highest peak of the Karkonosze, of the Sudetes, of the whole Czech Republic and — from the Polish side — the highest peak outside the Tatras. On the Czech side it is called Sněžka. The state border runs exactly across the summit, so at the top you stand in two countries at once. On the summit itself are the Polish meteorological observatory (with its distinctive "discs"), the Czech post office (where you can post a card from the highest point in the Czech Republic) and the small chapel of St Lawrence.
Śnieżka has a typically subpolar climate — an average annual temperature of about 0.5°C, an average of -7°C in January and +9°C in July. The wind blows hard (16 m/s on average, about 60 km/h), there is fog on about 70% of days in the year and snow lies for an average of 200 days. The weather can turn in 30 minutes from sunshine to a driving snowstorm — even in July.
How to climb Śnieżka from Karpacz
By the red route (the most popular)
The classic ascent — from the Wang Church or the Strzecha Akademicka mountain hotel. Time: about 3 hours up, about 2 hours down. The route: the Wang Church → the clearing → Strzecha Akademicka → Śląski Dom → Śnieżka. In winter it calls for crampons and an ice axe; in summer it is within reach of anyone reasonably fit.
By combining the lift with the ridge
The fastest way: the chairlift up Kopa (1377 m, about 10 minutes, a return ticket about 70 zł), then about 1.5 hours along the ridge to Śnieżka. This is the option for anyone less fit or with children over 8.
By the Czech route (Pěnkava)
From the Czech side you can take the cable car from Pec pod Sněžkou right to the summit (in two-person cabins!). In summer the queue is often longer than walking up. For those who want to experience Śnieżka without the effort.
What to see at the top
- The Polish meteorological observatory — the distinctive "discs" visible from far off, not open inside to visitors
- The Czech post office on Śnieżka — the highest post office in the Czech Republic, where you can send a postcard
- The chapel of St Lawrence — of 1681, on the Czech side of the summit
- The border posts — a compulsory photograph, one foot in Poland and the other in the Czech Republic
- The panorama — in good visibility you can see the Tatras (about 200 km away), the Beskids and most of the Sudetes
Things to remember
The weather changes in a flash. Dress in layers. Even in summer take a windproof jacket, a hat and gloves. At the top it is always 10–15°C colder than in Karpacz.
Food and water. There is a hut at the top (the Czech Bouda) with food, but prices are high. Better to take your own sandwiches and 1.5 l of water per person.
Boots. Trekking boots above the ankle with a good sole. Trainers are asking for an injury. In winter, crampons are essential.
Time. Leave the summit no later than 16:00, or 17:00 in summer — dusk falls quickly in the mountains and descending in the dark is dangerous.

When to go
March and April — snow still on the ridge, so crampons are needed. May — the first ascents without winter gear.
The ideal time for everyone. Afternoon storms — set off early. Crowds at weekends — choose a weekday.
September is the loveliest — the colours of the tundra and less frequent fog. October is already cold, with snow possible from the end of the month.
For the experienced only — strong winds, icy slopes and avalanches. Crampons, an ice axe and knowledge of the route are needed.
