A sight in the Gdańsk region

Wisłoujście Fortress — a fortress at the mouth of the Vistula

A historic coastal fortress at the former mouth of the Vistula, which for centuries guarded access to the harbour at Gdańsk. Its distinctive round tower-lighthouse and ring of fortifications impress by their scale and history.

The fortress

Wisłoujście Fortress grew over centuries in a strategic place — at the former mouth of the Vistula and the entrance to the harbour at Gdańsk. Its core is a distinctive cylindrical tower which also served as a lighthouse, surrounded by ramparts and bastions from later ages.

What to see

  • The cylindrical tower — the historic core, once also a lighthouse
  • The ramparts and bastions — a ring of fortifications from later centuries
  • Its position by the water — at the harbour entrance, an atmospheric place
  • A branch of the Museum of Gdańsk — open seasonally

In practice

The fortress is a branch of the Museum of Gdańsk and is usually open seasonally — it is worth checking the opening hours and the form of the visit (guided tours are also possible) in advance. The way there leads into the harbour area; dress for windy weather by the water.
