Przedpole and the area — a guide to the Roztocze region

Roztocze is a band of rolling hills running from north-west to south-east between the Lublin Upland and the Sandomierz Basin, reaching as far as Lviv. The region is built of limestone and opoka, covered in beech and fir woods and cut by deep river valleys.

Its heart is Roztocze National Park, with its headquarters at Zwierzyniec — it protects some 84 km² of forest, including Carpathian beechwoods and firs. The park runs a unique breeding centre for the Polish primitive horse at Florianka, where the descendants of the tarpan live under reserve conditions.

Roztocze is also a borderland cultural landscape: the masonry church on the water at Zwierzyniec, the Marian sanctuary at Krasnobród, the little town of Szczebrzeszyn with its synagogue and landscape park, and the white limestone quarries around Józefów, which earned the area the nickname of the „Roztocze Sahara”.

A natural attraction of national importance is the Tanew cascades in the „Nad Tanwią” reserve near Susiec — waterfalls over rock steps, among the finest in lowland Poland. The bases for exploring Roztocze are Zwierzyniec, Krasnobród, Susiec and Józefów; the approach is through Zamość.
