Pensjonat Perła and the area — a guide to the Świnoujście region
Świnoujście lies at the mouth of the Świna on the Baltic, where the islands of Usedom and Wolin meet along with several dozen smaller ones — it is the only Polish town spread over so many islands, linked by ferries and (recently) a tunnel under the Świna. The centre of the resort is on Usedom, right by the German border.
The town's emblem is its lighthouse — the tallest in Poland and one of the tallest on the Baltic, with a viewing platform reached after several hundred steps. Its second landmark is the white Stawa Młyny — a distinctive navigation beacon at the harbour entrance, standing on the breakwater.
Świnoujście has one of the widest beaches on the Polish coast and a long, well-kept promenade linking the resort with German Ahlbeck on the other side of the border. Add to that the 19th-century forts (Fort Gerharda and Fort Anioła among them) — Prussian defences guarding the harbour entrance.
Getting there can be particular because of the islands: from the Polish side traditionally by the crossings or the tunnel, and efficiently from the German side too (by rail to Ahlbeck/Świnoujście-Centrum). It is close by car from Berlin, which makes the resort popular with German visitors as well.
