Nad Rogalami and the area — a guide to the Mazury region
Masuria is the informal name of a tourist region covering the eastern half of the Warmia-Masuria province — in the language of Polish geography, the Masurian Lakeland and part of the Iława Lakeland. The region has some 2,700 lakes, among them the largest in Poland — Śniardwy (114 km²) and Mamry (104 km²) — joined by a system of canals into a single sailing route more than 200 kilometres long.
The tourist capital of the region is Mikołajki (3,800 inhabitants), known as the „pearl of Masuria” — set on the narrows between Lake Tałty and Lake Mikołajskie, with a marina right in the centre. At the height of the season the town holds five times more visitors than residents. The other important centre is Giżycko (about 28,000), with Boyen Fortress, the swing bridge and the Łuczański Canal.
Masuria has a strong cultural identity of its own — a mixture of Prussian, Polish and Masurian heritage (the local Protestant minority, today all but gone). From Prussian times come the Wolf's Lair at Gierłoż (Hitler's former headquarters, now a museum in the forest), Boyen Fortress in Giżycko (a 19th-century fortification) and a great many neo-Gothic churches. From the Catholic heritage — the basilica at Święta Lipka, the jewel of Warmian Baroque.
The nature of Masuria is not only lakes. The Masurian Landscape Park covers 530 km², including Lake Łuknajno (a mute swan reserve), Lake Nidzkie and large stretches of forest. Woodland makes up about 30% of the region — beech and spruce, with big populations of storks, cranes and white-tailed eagles.
From Warsaw to Mikołajki it is about 3 hours by car (240 km, the S7 plus the DK16/DK58). By train it is harder — the nearest station is Mikołajki (a few connections a day), while Giżycko has more. The nearest airports are Warsaw-Modlin (180 km) and Olsztyn-Mazury at Szymany (60 km, but with few flights).
