Borne Sulinowo is a small town among pine forests on the clear Lake Pile, with one of the most unusual histories in Poland: for decades it was a closed military garrison that did not appear on maps. Today it is a peaceful place for a lakeside break and for tracing history.
Borne Sulinowo lies in the Drawsko Lake District on Lake Pile, surrounded by forest. Before the war it was the German garrison of Gross Born, during the war a camp for Polish officer prisoners (Oflag II D), and after 1945 Soviet troops were stationed here for almost half a century. The town was closed and did not appear on maps.
After the troops left in the early 1990s the town opened to civilians. Today it has two faces: holidays on Lake Pile — beaches, kayaks, cycling in the forest — and history: the old garrison buildings, a military museum, memorial sites and the abandoned Kłomino nearby.
